Nigerian 2007 poll: opposition appeals president's victory

ABUJA (AFP) -- A second Nigerian opposition candidate has asked the Supreme Court to overturn an election tribunal ruling that upheld President Umaru Yar'Adua's victory in the April 2007 election, court papers showed Saturday.

Court papers lodged by defeated candidate Atiku Abubakar and made available to AFP listed 39 points to back the motion.
It came nearly two weeks after another opposition candidate Mohammadu Buhari filed his own appeal to the Supreme Court.
On February 26, the election tribunal dismissed the requests of both candidates that the poll be annulled and re-run as a result of electoral fraud. Local and international observers said the 2007 polls -- presidential, legislative and state governorship -- were marred by serious fraud nationwide.
No date has been fixed for a hearing.
